Internal and external hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids may develop inside or around the anus. Symptoms vary with their location and may include protruding tissue, tenderness or bleeding during bowel movements.
Finding the cause of bleeding
Rectal bleeding is not always caused by hemorrhoids. A medical history and examination help identify the cause; further tests may be needed.
Treatment options
Changes to diet and toilet habits may be part of treatment. Persistent symptoms may lead to consideration of office procedures or surgery, depending on the findings.
