How a hernia develops
Tissue can protrude through a weak area of the abdominal wall. A bulge may become more noticeable with coughing or straining and may cause pain or pressure.
The type matters
Groin, umbilical and incisional hernias require individual assessment. Their location, symptoms and any previous operations guide the choice between monitoring and repair.
Symptoms needing urgent assessment
Sudden severe pain, vomiting or marked abdominal swelling with a hernia requires urgent assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
