Pilonidal Sinus

Information about a sinus, infection and recurring discharge near the top of the buttock cleft.

Where it develops

A pilonidal sinus usually appears as a small opening or tunnel beneath the skin near the top of the buttock cleft. It may go unnoticed until infected.

Symptoms to have assessed

A painful swelling, blood or pus discharge, and recurring infections need assessment. Sitting may become painful if an abscess develops.

Planning treatment

Treatment depends on whether infection is present and symptoms recur. Managing an abscess and operating on a persistent sinus may involve separate stages.
